How to Troubleshoot Common Nail Gun Problems: Misfires, Jams, and Air Leaks

If your nail gun isn’t firing properly, you’re not alone. Misfires, double fires, air leaks, or complete failure to shoot can turn a simple job into a frustrating mess. Whether you’re on site or in the workshop, here’s how to get your tool back in action fast.

🔧 1. Nail Gun Not Firing at All? Start with the Basics

Before diving deep, check the essentials:

  • Is the air compressor properly connected? Pneumatic nailers need correct PSI (usually 70–120).

  • Battery charged (for cordless models)?

  • Is the tool loaded with fasteners? Some nail guns won’t fire if the magazine is empty.

  • Trigger safety mechanism engaged? Most nailers have a contact tip that must be pressed down before firing.

🔩 2. Nail Gun Misfires or Double Fires

Frequent misfires or firing two nails at once often point to:

  • Worn trigger valve or bumper

  • Dirty or sticky feed system

  • Wrong fasteners for the model

🛠️ Solution:

  • Open the magazine and inspect for bent nails or staples.

  • Clean the nail track using compressed air and a dry cloth.

  • Replace worn O-rings or triggers if needed.

🔫 3. Nail Gun Is Jammed

A jammed fastener is one of the most common problems — especially if you’re using budget or off-brand nails.

How to clear a jam:

  1. Disconnect the air supply or battery

  2. Open the nose latch (check manual)

  3. Remove the jammed nail or staple with pliers

  4. Reload and test-fire

➡️ Avoid jams by using branded, high-quality fasteners matched to your tool. For Bostitch nailers, we recommend Bostitch galvanised nails available in our shop.

💨 4. Air Leaks from the Trigger or Exhaust

Air escaping near the trigger or back exhaust means:

  • Worn O-rings or seals

  • Loose screws or cracked housing

🛠️ Fix:

  • Check for visible cracks

  • Tighten all screws

  • Apply O-ring lubricant or replace damaged parts

👉 If your tool is under warranty, it may be safer (and cheaper) to replace the trigger assembly via the manufacturer.

📦 5. Wrong Nails or Staples for Your Tool

Using incorrect nail length, gauge, or shank type can result in:

  • Partial firing

  • Frequent jams

  • Inconsistent depth

Check your tool’s manual for approved fastener specs.

🧼 Bonus Tip: Clean Your Tool Regularly

Many issues — especially misfires and weak firing — are caused by a build-up of debris or lack of lubrication. Use a few drops of pneumatic tool oil in the air inlet daily, and clean the nosepiece regularly.

✅ Final Thoughts

If your nail gun won’t fire, jams frequently, or leaks air, don’t panic — these problems are usually quick fixes. With the right know-how (and fasteners), you’ll be back to work in no time.
